Background of the Study:
Caffeine is the most widely consumed psychoactive substance in the world, and its effects on health have been the subject of extensive research. In Adamawa State, consumption of caffeine—primarily through coffee, tea, and energy drinks—is common among working adults and students. Moderate caffeine intake has been associated with certain health benefits, such as improved alertness and cognitive function. However, excessive caffeine consumption has been linked to adverse cardiovascular effects, including increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure, and in some cases, arrhythmias (Okeke, 2023). The physiological impact of caffeine on the heart varies depending on individual sensitivity, consumption levels, and underlying health conditions. In Adamawa State, where lifestyle and dietary habits are rapidly evolving, there is a growing concern about the potential negative impact of high caffeine intake on heart health.

Factors influencing caffeine consumption in Adamawa State include cultural preferences, socioeconomic status, and the availability of caffeinated beverages. While some studies suggest that moderate caffeine consumption may have cardioprotective effects, excessive intake can lead to overstimulation of the cardiovascular system. Furthermore, the interaction of caffeine with other lifestyle factors, such as stress and poor diet, may exacerbate its negative effects on heart health (Ibrahim, 2024). There is a need for localized research to evaluate how caffeine consumption patterns in Adamawa State affect heart health outcomes, particularly in vulnerable populations. This study seeks to assess the association between caffeine intake and cardiovascular health by analyzing consumption data, heart health indicators, and the prevalence of cardiovascular conditions among residents (Fatima, 2025).

Statement of the Problem :
In Adamawa State, excessive caffeine consumption is emerging as a potential public health concern due to its adverse effects on heart health. Despite the popularity of caffeinated beverages, there is limited evidence on how high levels of caffeine intake affect cardiovascular parameters among the local population. Many individuals consume caffeine without an awareness of the potential risks, and excessive consumption may lead to elevated blood pressure, increased heart rate, and even arrhythmias. These cardiovascular effects are particularly concerning for individuals with pre-existing heart conditions or those at risk of developing such conditions (Umar, 2023). Moreover, the lack of public education on safe caffeine consumption levels and the interplay of caffeine with other lifestyle factors such as stress and diet further exacerbate the risk of heart-related complications. The inadequate regulation of caffeine products and the aggressive marketing strategies employed by manufacturers contribute to widespread consumption, often at levels that may be detrimental to health (Saleh, 2024). Without targeted interventions to promote awareness of healthy consumption habits, the potential for an increased burden of cardiovascular diseases remains high. This study aims to evaluate caffeine consumption patterns in Adamawa State and investigate their effects on heart health, thereby providing critical data to inform public health strategies and consumer education initiatives.

Objectives of the Study:

  • To assess caffeine consumption patterns among residents of Adamawa State.
  • To evaluate the relationship between caffeine intake and cardiovascular health indicators.
  • To recommend public health interventions to promote safe caffeine consumption.

Research Questions:

  • What are the prevalent levels of caffeine consumption in Adamawa State?
  • How does caffeine intake affect heart health parameters such as blood pressure and heart rate?
  • What measures can improve public awareness regarding healthy caffeine consumption?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Excessive caffeine consumption is significantly associated with increased blood pressure.
  • H2: High caffeine intake correlates with a greater prevalence of cardiovascular conditions.
  • H3: Public education initiatives will reduce harmful levels of caffeine consumption.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study focuses on adult populations in Adamawa State. Limitations include reliance on self-reported consumption data and difficulty controlling for confounding lifestyle factors.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Caffeine Consumption: The intake of caffeine-containing beverages and foods.
  • Heart Health: The condition of the cardiovascular system, including parameters like blood pressure and heart rate.
  • Cardiovascular Conditions: Diseases affecting the heart and blood vessels.
